Guest Blog by Caroline Meinen, Wedding Planner

Hello OCC blog followers!

My name is Caroline Meinen, and I am a wedding coordinator in the Houston area. I work for Belle of the Ball and have been in this business for about five years. The shoe is now on the other foot, and I am in the process of planning my own wedding! When asked to contribute my “perspective on the biz,” I tried to think about the things that I not only focus on as the planner, but now as the bride, too. A few things came to me instantly.

As you know, trends in weddings come and go, but if you’re planning your wedding right now, these are a few standouts pertaining to your dress, décor, food, and music!

Favorite Wedding Dress Trend
There were so many great trends to come out of Bridal Fashion Week this year, but over all of them, wedding gown separates, (especially crop tops) were my standout favorite!
I love these looks from Reem Acra and Houghton from the Fall 2015 Shows! Pairing the bare midriff with a high neck line and sleeves keeps this style looking polished and modern.

Favorite Food Trend
In the last few years, what you serve at your wedding has gone from sustenance to substance! What used to just be “a nice meal”, is now another fun way to showcase your personality. There are still occasions where a formal seated dinner is suitable, but I find that heavy hors d’oeuvres and specialty stations allow for your guests to enjoy your wedding at their own pace. A lot of brides are looking to the comfort classics rather than the fancy feast. By serving things like chicken and waffles, soft pretzels, sliders, and fries, brides are taking the fuss out of the food and focusing on fun! I’m also a big advocate for the late night snack: donut holes or a smores station are guaranteed to be crowd-pleasers at 11:00 or later.

Favorite Décor Trend
I’ve been fortunate to plan weddings of all different styles in ballrooms to barns. Through this experience, I have found many décor elements that really speak to me. Right now, the incorporation of natural elements and natural colors are the loudest voices in my ear. Loose arrangements, the use of wood furniture and lots of greenery work so well at an outdoor venue like The Orchard at Caney Creek!

Favorite Music Trend

At this time, you can find just about any type of music for your big day, but one thing that I continuously find as an entertaining and versatile option is a string ensemble. Hear me out:  while a string ensemble is typically seen to fit a more classic wedding ceremony, they have become so much more. Any collection of strings can provide a varied and full sound that not only works for Pachelbel or Bach, but also for Bruno or Gaga. Many string groups can play a vast selection of contemporary music ,spanning from Sinatra to Sia elevating your cocktail hour entertainment substantially.

In the end, remember that it’s YOUR wedding, so make it your own. The best part about any wedding is seeing the couple’s love and individuality shine through the details. It’s easy to get caught up in the planning. If you remember why you’re getting married in the first place, it’s much easier to enjoy the process. You can always give us a call at Belle of the Ball if you find that you need a hand!
